City fell to a 3-1 defeat in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League after a characterful display at Arsenal.
The hosts were two up at the break courtesy of a Frida Maanum strike and a header from Lotte Wubben-Moy.
Sille Struck bagged her first in City colours with a great finish after 70 minutes, but the hosts added a third deep into stoppage time through Stina Blackstenius to seal the result.
Chloe Mustaki was called into action after 10 minutes to block from Bath Mead after Blackstenius had been unable to get round Liv Clark.
The opener came just shy of the half hour mark as the Gunners put together a smart move down the right before cutting back to Maanum who guided an excellent finish in off the crossbar.
Four minutes later, captain Katie McCabe’s powerful drive from 25 yards was tipped over the bar by Liv Clark.
The hosts doubled their advantage after 36 minutes through the head of Wubben-Moy as she guided a corner inside the far post.
It was a solid City performance, backed by genuine threat going forward, and Lauren Smith’s side got themselves back into the game with 20 minutes to play.
Connolly’s free-kick from inside her own half caused Arsenal problems in the box before dropping for Struck who smashed him a first-time effort.
Substitute Naomi Layzell was then called into action with 12 minutes to play as she made a brilliant challenge to deny Blackstenius a certain goal from close range before, moments later, the hosts rattled the woodwork as Caitlin Foord’s curling effort from the left of the area struck the crossbar.
Deep into stoppage time, with City pursuing an equaliser, Blackstenius scored Arsenal’s third as she was played through on goal to finish.
