City fell to a cruel 3-2 defeat as Elisabeth Terland scored her second of the afternoon in the 95th minute.
Lauren Smith’s side came from behind twice in the second half as both Abi Harrison and Carrie Jones found the net, only to fall just short at the death.
Jamie-Lee Napier went close after eight minutes as she volleyed wide from the edge of the area, moments before Amy Rodgers tried her luck from distance.
City looked the more dangerous of the two sides, but it was Terland who opened the scoring for Brighton after 32 minutes, the Norwegian winning the ball high up the pitch to beat Shae Yanez with an early effort from range.
Both Napier and Harrison saw efforts go wide before the break as City fought for a way back into things.
The Robins started the second half well and were unlucky not to score in the 54th minute as Harrison’s shot on the turn struck the base of the post before Emily Syme was denied on the follow-up.
From the resulting corner however, City would find the net. Syme delivered from the right and Harrison, on her second attempt, leathered the ball into the roof of the net.
Moments later the hosts got themselves back in front as Katie Robinson finished om the angle.
Megan Connolly then went close with a free-kick but fired just wide.
Jones pulled one back in the 84th minute and looked to have secured a valuable point on the road as she turned home after Shania Hayles header was saved, but it wasn’t to be.
A cross in from the left wasn’t cleared, and the Seagulls top scorer pounced to break City hearts.
