The Vixens now must win their remaining two games in the WSL1 away at Manchester City and at home to Liverpool and hope that Birmingham fail to gain a point from their final fixtures in order to survive.
It was a familiar story for Willie Kirk's side, having dominated possession for large parts of the game only to lose out to some sloppy goals.
With Caroline Weir and Jade Boho Sayo both looking lively for the home side, it was Birmingham who made the breakthrough on 38 minutes as Mel Lawley capitalised on some defensive uncertainty to race through and shoot low past Mary Earps.
Karen Carney made it 2-0 from the penalty spot just before half-time after Hannah Short was harshly adjudged to have handled in the box.
Carney then completed the scoring again from the spot in the second half, after having been tripped in the box when clear through.
Bristol struggled to turn their dominance in possession in to clear cut chances with only two long range strikes from Weir that rattled the away crossbar looking like giving them a way back into the game.
The Vixens will now need to make the greatest of great escapes if they are to avoid relegation to WSL2.
