City were narrowly beaten by Tottenham Hotspur at Ashton Gate.

City created some good chances and made it a relatively even contest, but an early strike from Bethany England was enough for Spurs to head back to North London with all three points.

Lauren Smith made two changes to her side after last week's defeat to Manchester United, as Abi Harrison replaced the suspended Jamie-Lee Napier, and Shae Yanez made way for Frank Bentley between the sticks, a first appearance since the opening day of the season for City’s number one.

The visitors took the lead inside two minutes when Grace Clinton found Bethany England in behind, who cut inside onto her left foot and rifled into the back of the net.

City’s first notable chance of the game came when the ball fell to Harrison after a scramble in the area, but the Scot didn't get the connection she was looking for and her volley was comfortable for Becky Spencer.

England was heavily involved again, this time turning provider, floating a pinpoint ball into the path of Celin Bizet, whose first time effort hit the side netting of Bentley’s goal.

Jessica Naz then went close for Spurs, dragging her attempt wide from close range after being teed up by England.

Smith was forced into a double change just before the break, as Shania Hayles and Sille Struck made way for Mari Ward and Sarah Stratigakis.

The first opportunity of the second half fell to The Lilywhites as Drew Spence saw her shot sail narrowly wide.

Bentley got down well to deny Spence, whose bouncing effort from range looked as though it was creeping into the bottom corner without the intervention of the City shot stopper.

Stratigakis found herself in acres of space in the middle of the park, and she drove towards the Spurs defence before seeing her shot saved well by Spencer.

Connolly set Morgan away with a lovely lofted pass over the fullback, and the Welsh international did well to drag it back for Harrison to shoot, but her fierce effort was blocked and cleared.

Bentley kept City in the game with another good save, this time tipping Spence’s strike over the bar.

Substitute Lisa Evans skipped past three before finding Stratigakis on the edge of the area, but her cross evaded everyone in red and went behind for a goal kick.
Spurs hit City on the break as The Robins pushed for an equaliser, with Matilda Vinberg seeing her shot deflect behind for a corner.

City created some good openings but the visitors ultimately controlled the final stages well and ensured they headed back to North London with all three points.
