City finished 2023 with a home defeat by Chelsea but not before going toe-to-toe with the Barclays Women's Super League leaders.
It took a moment of genius from Lauren James, a volley from Erin Cuthbert and a Sam Kerr far-post header to give Chelsea the win.
However, the Robins' progress in the 10 games on their Super League return has been evident and they created enough opportunities not to have ended the game goalless.
Chelsea had the brighter start with Jamie-Lee Napier having to block Lawrence’s cross before Sjoeke Nusken steered James’ ball over and Cuthbert shot wide.
City looked dangerous themselves and Amalie Thestrup was inches away from getting on the end of Ffion Morgan’s cross while Abi Harrison had a shot blocked.
Chelsea needed a moment of brilliance to opening the scoring and it was their star James who provided it in the 17th minute when she picked the ball up outside the box, took four touches to the left and then shot back across goal beyond the outstreached Liv Clark.
The Blues doubled their lead in the 35h minute when Connolly headed Guron Reitan’s cross high but it fell to Cuthbert who volleyed in.
The Robins needed Clark to be at her best when she came out to deny Kerr twice while, at the other end, Amy Rodgers won the ball and tried to lob Hannah Hampton from long range.
City’s best chance came for Morgan in the 43rd minute, Thestrup squaring the ball for the Welsh forward but Hampton got out to save.
Harrison was denied an opening City goal in the 50th minute after she nipped in to steal the ball from Sophie Ingle but the defender recovered to make the shot-saving tackle.
Connolly did likewise to deny Fran Kirby while Layzell headed away Reitan’s shot as they weathered a storm of Chelsea pressure that included James’ hitting the bar from 35 yards out.
The visitors broke through again in the 59th minute when Kerr headed in Reitan’s cross at the far post.
Clark showed great bravery to come out and meet Aggie Beever-Jones but was injured in so doing and the keeper eventually left the field in the 88th minute.
Replacement keeper Benedicte Haaland was immediately called into action, diving to push away Beever-Jones’ shot.
City kept going at Chelsea for the eight added minutes, cheered on by the 9,442-strong crowd, but they couldn’t get over the line.
