Two goals from former Robin Lauren Hemp, a brace from Hayley Raso and one apiece for Khadija Shaw and Mary Fowler secured victory against a valiant City cheered on by a 2,647-strong crowd.
✍️ BACKGROUND
The Robins clinched their place in the knockout stages after a 1-0 win in the South Coast against Lewes to top Group D.
Lauren Smith’s side were meeting the Citizens for the second time at the same stage of the competition, after facing the Barclays WSL outfit last season – Man City running out 3-1 winners at the Etihad Campus on their wait to claiming the Cup.
City were without the suspended captain Aimee Palmer and Grace Clinton, while fellow new loan signing Gracie Pearse was Cup-tied having played for Spurs.
Mari Ward started while fellow 17-year-old Tianna Teisar and 16-year-old Fearne Slocombe were on the bench
The visitors included Lionesses Alex Greenwood, Steph Haughton and Hemp, with Chloe Kelly and Ellie Roebuck named on the substitutes’ bench.
📝 WHAT HAPPENED?
City were under pressure from the start with Olivia Clark pushing Filipppa Angeldahl’s shot from the edge of the box wide.
And it only took nine minutes for the visitors to open the scoring, Raso getting on the end of Greenwood’s deep cross to score at the far post.
City did make some in-roads into the blue, with captain Harrison breaking down the left and crossing but Kersti Casparij got down low to claim.
The Robins went further behind in the 13th minute when Raso broke down the right and finished off in the bottom corner.
Clark did well to save from Shaw in the 28th minute but it was small respite as two minutes later Shaw got herself between two defenders to head in Hemp’s cross.
Hemp grabbed her first when she cut back from the left and finished from a narrow angle and the 2022 Euro winner then turned provider for Fowler to connect left-footed for the fifth just before half-time.
⏱️ HALF-TIME
City were much tighter in the second half to limit the visitors’ chances with Clark cutting out the danger from a Hemp cross and Bruce blocking Shaw’s cross.
Hemp grabbed her second just after the hour-mark from Shaw’s through ball but it was to be the Citizens’ final success.
Smith made a triple substitution with Jodie Hutton, Jess Woolley and Teisar coming on for Chloe Bull, Shania Hayles and Ward, while Slocombe came on for Syme to make her Robins’ debut.
City’s best chance fell to Elysia Boddy who got her head to Hutton’s free-kick but could only steer the ball over the bar.
