🧐 BACKGROUND
Bristol City returned to action after a week-long international break as the Robins embarked on their final three games of the 2021/22 season.
Lauren Smith was boosted by the return of Melissa Johnson, who had spent a number of weeks sidelined with an ankle injury.
Ella Powell and Jasmine Bull also returned to the starting lineup in place of Naomi Layzell and Flo Allen.
✍️ WHAT HAPPENED?
Coventry United started the match with intensity as they looked to push their hosts in the early stages at the Robins High Performance Centre.
However, the first opportunity of the match fell the way of the Robins. Aggie Beever-Jones showcased her skillset with the ball at her feet to fashion five-yards of space and fire on goal, with her effort being bravely blocked behind for a corner.
Katie Wilkinson tried her luck from range as United probed for an opener, but her effort failed to trouble Fran Bentley in the City net.
Abi Harrison then went close for City as she saw a dangerous shot deflected wide, before Wilkinson tried her luck yet again but to no avail.
City would be the first team to strike and it would be none other than Harrison herself. The returning Johnson slid the ball through with pinpont precision to the advancing striker, who picked her spot from the edge of the area to bag her 20th goal of the season.
Soon after, Harrison almost had a second. Again it would Johnson the provider as she jinked her way past two Coventry United defenders and squared to Harrison, however the ball overran leaving City’s top goalscorer too tight of angle to convert.
⏱ HALF-TIME
Coventry United began the second period with a renewed energy as they looked to fight their way back into the game.
Twice in the opening 15 minutes of the second half Bentley was called into action to make two fine saves.
The first down into the bottom corner to prevent an own-goal after the ball ricocheted off Satara Murray, before flying across to deny a spectacular goal for the returning Olivia Fergusson.
City remained under the cosh as Chloe Bull then hooked the ball off the line after Bentley had misjudged the flight of a looping Coventry cross.
Harrison continued to cause Coventry headaches as the striker found the side-netting before unleashing a venomous strike five minutes later, which stung the palms Lucy Thomas.
Coventry United’s pressure would eventually tell as Wilkinson headed past Bentley to equalise after confusion in the City box.
Beever-Jones almost sealed all three points in style with a curling shot in added time, however Thomas was across her line quickly to palm the ball away.
