Bristol City were beaten 3-1 by Birmingham City in the Women’s League Cup at the Robins High Performance Centre.

Lily Agg, Louanne Worsey and Simone Magill scored for the Blues as Abi Harrison’s first-half strike proved to be only a consolation.

Steve Kirby made eight changes to the side that started the 2-1 win over Charlton, with Harrison, Jackie Burns, Sille Struck, Greta Humphries, Jazz Bull, Amalie Thestrup and Maddy Earl all coming in, with Emily Syme captaining the side.

The visitors made a lightning quick start, almost taking the lead inside 30 seconds, but Ava Baker dragged her shot wide.

Birmingham went in front when Magill teed up Agg to fire into the top corner from just inside the area.

The Blues scored a second not long after, as Worsey capitalised on a mix-up at the back to slot past Burns.

City reacted well and got one back almost immediately when Harrison steered home from close range to make it 2-1 after just 15 minutes.

The game began to swing in favour of the Robins as they started to pile the pressure on and looked most likely to get an equaliser.

However, Magill added a third for the visitors against the run of play as City committed bodies forward in an attempt to level things up.

Jamie-Lee Napier and Harley Bennett were introduced in place of Humphries and Chloe Mustaki at the break, as Kirby looked for a reaction from his side.

The first chance of the second period fell to the visitors but Martha Harris was unable to trouble Burns from just outside the box.

Thestrup thought she had reduced the deficit when she bundled home Bull’s cross from the right, only to be denied by the Assistant Referee, whose flag was raised for offside.

Rebecca McKenna beat Bennett on the right hand side before pulling it back for Worsey, but her effort was well saved by Burns.

Substitute Mari Ward skipped past a couple of defenders before firing a wicked ball across the face of the area which cannoned off a Birmingham defender and clipped the crossbar, before going behind for a corner.

Starting XI: Burns (GK), Mustaki (Napier 45’), Struck, Humphries (Bennett 45’), Bull (Rodgers 71’), Syme (C) (Ward 71’), Bance, Powell, Earl (Teisar 60’), Thestrup, Harrison. Substitutes: Bentley (GK), Lloyd-Smith, Morgan, Slocombe.
