Both sides had their chances to break the deadlock, notably Alhaji Sesay producing a brilliant stop to prevent a Pilgrims free kick in the second-half.

The soggy conditions far from helped the ball on the ground, while better finishing was needed in the final third.

Plymouth went close after just three minutes but Sesay saved comfortably when Alex Fletcher found himself one-on-one, before Ricardo Rees headed narrowly wide shortly after.

Pilgrims shotstopper Mike Cooper did well to deny Luke Williams' City Under-23s an opener with saves against Rory Holden and Chris Turner-Williams.

Sesay then expertly got a hand to an Alex Battle free kick, which looked destined to ripple the back of the net, while Sam Bell and Marcus Day failed the hit the target as City threatened late on.

City U23s: Sesay, Turner-Williams, Soady, Williams, Harrison, Ali, Pearson, Hall (Richards 65), Rees (Bell 46), Holden, Day. Subs not used: Carey, Harper, Owers.
