Both sides started brightly, but City Women found themselves with the opening chance of the game with just three minutes on the clock.
After some clever build-up play, Millie Farrow found herself through on goal but her curling effort finished just inches past the post.
Moments later, Chelsea had the ball in the net thanks to midfielder Drew Spence.
The England international muscled her way into the box before battling with the City Women defence.
The cross came in and Spence rose highest, with her header nestling itself into the bottom corner to send put the Blues one to the good.
Millie Farrow and Lauren Hemp combined well throughout the opening 45 minutes but couldn’t get past Hedvig Lindahl in goal. The Swede was called into action as the half-time whistle beckoned and stayed big to deny Farrow a certain goal.
The second-half got off to a slow start, with neither side able to create a chance in the opening ten minutes.
City Women had the chance to equalise with just under a quarter of the match left to play, as Hemp looked to connect with Farrow’s pinpoint pass, the linesman flagged for offside.
Ten minutes later, Lindhal was tested twice in quick succession but the Vixens couldn’t find a way past the Chelsea shot-stopper.
As the clock ticked towards 90 minutes, Jonna Andersson grabbed a second for the visitors thanks to a daring run by top scorer Fran Kirby.
Sophie Baggaley was called into action in the dying seconds, producing a world-class save to deny Ji So-Yun’s 30-yard effort to prevent it from being three.
