Hutton scored a marvellous goal direct from a corner kick midway through the first period to secure the Robins’ place in the knockout stages of the League Cup competition.

✍️ BACKGROUND

Lauren Smith named a much-changed starting XI in comparison to the side that ran out at the Robins High Performance Centre on Sunday.

Liv Clark started between the sticks, while the back three was comprised of Lia Cataldo, Naomi Layzell and Jodie Hutton.

Ella Powell and Maddi Wilde started at right and left wing-back respectively with Aimee Palmer, Chloe Bull and Jasmine Bull  starting in the engine room.

Meanwhile, Tianna Teisar and Lily Greenslade lead the line at the Dripping Pan.

In total, 11 of the matchday 23 were products of the club’s Academy or Regional Talent Centre programme.

📝 WHAT HAPPENED?

City began the Group D fixture in the ascendancy as Powell’s cross into the danger area flashed across the face of goal and agonisingly past Greenslade.

Teisar then demonstrated great footwork to earn a free-kick on the outside of the area, from which Hutton tested Moore in the Lewes net, but to no avail.

However, the game’s breakthrough would come from Hutton on the half an hour mark. The defender launched an in-swinging corner into the box which flew past the heads of the Lewes defenders to nestle into the far corner of the net and put City ahead.

Izzy Dalton and Emily Kraft went close for the hosts before the break as both forced Liv Clark into fine saves to keep the Rooks at bay.

⏱️ HALF-TIME

The break brought about a triple change for the Robins as Palmer, Powell and Cataldo were replaced by Emily Syme, Elysia Boddy and Grace Clinton.

Lewes came out of the blocks determined to find an equaliser as Clark had to be alert to a testing ball over the top, before a Lewes cross evaded Kraft by a matter of inches.

At the opposite end, Clinton went close to doubling City’s lead with an effort from close range.

The two sides then traded glorious chances to find the back of net. First, Chloe Bull saw a header flash across the face of goal which was followed by Kraft, who could only direct her header wide from the edge of the six-yard box.

Inside the last ten minutes, City were reduced to ten as they attempted to hold onto their slender lead. Having come on as a second half substitute, Clinton was shown a second yellow card and dismissed in only her second City appearance.

However, the Robins would hold to on book their place in the last eight of the competition against Manchester City, who they will face on Wednesday, January 25th (7pm) at the Robins High Performance Centre.
