City tasted their heaviest defeat of the Barclays Women's Super League campaign as they lost 5-0 to Manchester City.

Jill Roord and Bunny Shaw both scored twice to add to a goal from Laia Aleixandri, all before half-time, as the Citizens put on an impressive display.

The hosts opened the scoring after eight minutes as Roord capitalised on the second ball to tuck home after Shaw's effort from close range bounced down off the crossbar.

Chloe Kelly could have made it two after 16 minutes but Kaylan Marckese pulled off a smart stop to push the Lioness' effort over the crossbar.

It took exceptional defending from Naomi Layzell to keep the score at 1-0 two minutes later, as she slid in to deny Shaw as she shaped to tuck home from a low cross.

Lauren Smith's side had a chance to go forward after half an hour as they broke down the right through Amalie Thestrup. A cross to the back post had a little too much height on it for Chloe Mustaki before Rachel Furness' low cross was well cleared.

Laia Aleixandri headed home from a free-kick after 34 minutes to double the hosts advantage before Bunny Shaw got in on the act four minutes later.

Marckese had to make another good save after 42 minutes, this time to deny Shaw from a tight angle.

The hosts added two more in five minutes of first-half stoppage time as Roord and Shaw both got their second of the afternoon.

The second half was a comparatively quiet affair, with the Robins putting in a resolute defensive display.

Marckese was called into action on a couple occasions, while Layzell made important interventions to deny both Roord and Shaw their hat-tricks.

Ella Powell and Ffion Morgan both looked to affect the game from the bench, with the latter seeing an effort saved.

It took brave goalkeeping from Marckese in stoppage time to deny Shaw as she smothered at the feet of the Jamaican forward.
