Emily Syme scored a last-gasp winner to send City through to the Fifth Round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Southampton after extra-time.

The host had taken a first-half lead through Michaela McAlonie but two goals from Syme, who was introduced as a half-time substitute, saw City into the hat.

Charlotte Healy made three changes to her side that started the win over Nottingham Forest in the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 last week, with Harley Bennett, Vera Jones and captain Vicky Losada all coming into the starting XI.

The opening half-hour was quiet, with City having a few half chances but nothing more.

Losada combined well with Katie Robinson before she fired across goal, but Jones was unable to get there in time at the back post.

Another cross, this time from Losada, narrowly evaded Rio Hardy who was looking to get something on it but Fran Stenston got there in the nick of time to collect the ball.

City started to get some joy with some more dangerous deliveries, first from Losada, which was cleared as far as Mari Ward, who whipped a fantastic ball in towards the back post, and it was headed behind for a corner.

The best chance of the game came five minutes before the break when Esther Morgan this time floated a cross towards the back post, where Ward climbed above her defender but rattled the woodwork with her header.

Southampton took the lead against the run of play when McAlonie lifted the ball over Fran Bentley and into the back of the net.

The hosts went into the interval ahead and Healy made a double change at half-time, introducing Syme and Lexi Lloyd-Smith.

City took the game to the Saints and Ward’s cross was agonisingly close to finding Robinson in the area, but was just too high.

The two half-time changes combined as Lloyd-Smith teed Syme to shoot, but her effort was well saved by Stenston.

Morgan then tried her luck from the edge of the area having been set up by Hardy, but her shot flew just wide.

City’s number 20 then provided a vital block at the other end to stop a dangerous looking counter attack.

Jessie Gale replaced Sophie Ingle with 20 minutes left on the clock as The Robins looked for the all important equaliser.

That leveler almost came when Marine Dafeur let fly from distance and went agonisingly close to finding the top corner, but it ultimately sailed wide.

City did deservedly draw level when Syme, just moments after seeing a shot saved, flicked Ward’s cross past Stenston.

Gale had a golden chance to win it with the last kick of the game, but she dragged her shot wide, as the contest headed to extra time.

The first chance of extra-time fell to City as Lloyd-Smith fired over from just inside the area.

Strenston was then forced into a good save, tipping Hardy’s goalbound header over the bar.

City had Saints under the cosh and Syme’s free-kick was headed wide by Bennett in the latest good chance for Healy’s side.

Substitute Camila Saez struck narrowly wide from a free-kick before Syme also went close again as City piled on the pressure.

The game was won with 90 seconds left on the clock when Syme fired past Stenston to get hers and City’s second and to send The Robins through.
