Shania Hayles set City on their way as she bagged a first-half brace to put Lauren Smith's side two goals to the good at the break.
Ella Powell then marked her 50th Club appearance with her first goal, with Jazz Bull also netting her first for the side late on.
Abi Harrison rounded off a five-star performance in stoppage time to put her side within one victory of the league title.
📝 BACKGROUND
Jodie Hutton, Shania Hayles and Ella Powell came into the side, while Vicky Bruce missed out through suspension.
Grace Clinton started in an advanced role as part of a front three with Harrison and Hayles.
✍️ WHAT HAPPENED?
Furness tried her luck early on in the afternoon as she fired goalwards from range but saw her effort comfortably saved by Claudia Moan.
Just four minutes into the action, City struck the woodwork. Abi Harrison got a boot to Jodie Hutton's corner and saw her looping effort bounce back off the angle between post and crossbar.
City were really starting to tick as Harrison saw an effort bravely blocked in the area after a flowing midfield move in the seventh-minute.
The hosts' first opening came via a free-kick as Liz Ejupi's glancing header was blocked by Fran Bentley before Harrison nodded away a goal-bound header from the resulting corner.
Hayles went close after 32 minutes as she nodded over after some excellent build-up play, and it wouldn't be long before the breakthrough came.
Just three minutes later, Furness delivered a deft cross from the left after a City corner broke loose. Brooke Aspin forced an excellent stop from Moan but the Black Cats stopper could do nothing to deny Hayles on the rebound.
With five minutes of the half to play, Hayles doubled her tally after latching onto Grace Clinton's through-ball and smashing home from the edge of the area.
City almost grabbed a third before the half, but first Clinton and then Gracie Pearse saw efforts desperately cleared by the Sunderland defence.
⏱ HALF-TIME
The Robins looked to control proceedings in the second-half and after a quiet opening 15 minutes they made sure of the points.
Harrison won the ball high up the pitch before finding Powell in the area who struck home via the post.
But they didn't stop there.
Aimee Palmer struck the bar direct from a corner with her first touch after coming on as a substitute before, with 10 minutes to play, Tianna Teisar went through one-on-one only to see her effort saved.
Jazz Bull, moments after entering the fray with 87 minutes on the clock, scored her first goal for the club as she latched onto a ball in the area and fired past the 'keeper with her first touch.
Then, deep into stoppage time, Teisar found Harrison in the box and the Scot made no mistake in lashing the ball home!
