The defender, who turned 18 last weekend, came through the Robins Academy before cementing a place in Lauren Smith’s first team from the age of 16.
Aspin’s first professional goal came in the final home game of last season as she found the net to help the Robins secure the league title.
“This is an exciting move for Brooke and we’re really pleased to be able to have her back on loan next season,” said Head Coach Smith. “We know how good she is as a player but there’s still more to come and we know that Bristol City is the perfect place to continue her development over the next year.”
Aspin joined City at the age of 14 and has progressed through the player pathway to become a first team regular as well as captaining England Under-17s.
Under the men's Premier League’s and the English Football League’s (EFL's) Rules and Regulations, a club signing an out-of-contract player under the age of 24 is obliged to pay compensation to the former club for its training and development of the player.
That is not the case in the women's game and Smith reflected: "It’s disappointing that there isn't a sustainable model in place to ensure that clubs like us, that are proud to develop and support youth players, are supported and compensated in these situations."
Brooke Aspin made the following statement:
To My Bristol City family,
Writing this isn’t easy, and I have found it hard to put my feelings into words, but I’m going to give it a go.
Last August I was presented with the most difficult challenge of my life. I was facing an uncertain future and didn’t quite know how serious the illness I was suffering from actually was. During this time all I could think about was returning to full health.
That experience has shaped my mentality ever since. It taught me never to take anything for granted in life and to cherish every moment. I made a promise to myself that I would live my life to the fullest, and to give absolutely everything to make the most of life. I became even more determined to do everything I can to turn my dreams into reality.
Over the past few weeks as I prepared to turn 18, I have faced a decision over where and with whom, to sign my first professional contract. After thinking long and hard for many weeks about what is right for me at this stage in my career, I have made the decision to sign with Chelsea FC.
But this is not the end for me and Bristol City…
During my conversations with Lauren, Emma Hayes, my family and my agent, we all agreed that there are still unwritten chapters in my Bristol City story.
With that in mind, I am eternally grateful to both clubs for allowing me to remain on loan at Bristol City for the 2023-24 season, in order to continue my development under Lauren’s expert guidance.
Last year was the hardest year imaginable, but the players, staff and everyone associated with Bristol City supported me through it all, and I can’t put into words just how much this team feels like family.
I am in this position because of the trust that Lauren and the coaching staff have placed in me over the last two years. Having played a small part in helping Bristol City return to the WSL, I now want to make sure I give everything I can to help the club thrive there.
I have always given my absolute best, both on and off the pitch to help this wonderful club succeed. Bristol City has given me everything in return, and we have unfinished business together…
I can’t wait to see you all in September.
With love, Brooke x
