Bristol Sport Group Chief Financial Officer Gavin Marshall has been on the City Women board for the last five seasons and will continue his role as a director for the men’s side as the Robins further align their men’s and women’s programmes.
This summer has been one of change for the Robins following relegation to the FA Championship, with the appointment on Lauren Smith as Head Coach and the addition of 11 new summer signings, as well as the introduction of five academy players into the first team fold.
Marshall sees the season ahead as an opportunity to rebuild with a new vision that will allow for long-term success on and off the pitch.
“Relegation was disappointing for all concerned. However, it really gives us an opportunity to press the reset button and redefine what we’re about as a club,” said Marshall.
“We want to build and maintain a successful first team squad based on homegrown talent. Something we have always been very successful at is providing that pathway and bringing talent through our Regional Talent Centre and Academy.
“I think being in the Championship gives us a better opportunity to do that and bring those players through. Bringing in Lauren is really integral to do that because she understands our club from top to bottom, she was here for seven years previously, and she buys into that vision.”
Marshall will be working closely with Bristol City CEO Richard Gould to further drive the alignment between the two sides and push the women’s programme forward.
“Richard and I are both directors of the men’s and women’s clubs and we recognise that we need to do more to align the clubs moving forward, and we will do,” said Marshall.
“Equally as important, I sit on the Bristol Sport board, so it’s important we tap into the commercial expertise there so that we are aligned across the group as a whole."
Bristol City Women supporters can watch the Robins in action at the High Performance Centre with a Season Card, starting with their first home fixture of campaign against Lewes FC Women on Sunday, September 5th (3pm KO).
