The hosts went into the sheds with a 2-0 lead thanks to an own goal from Meaghan Sargeant and a Natalie Haigh header, which left the Robins with a mountain to climb in the second period.

The Robins clawed their way back into the game midway through the second half though, when substitute Faye Bryson found the top corner with a sublime strike to set up a tense final 20 minutes.

Deep into stoppage time City snatched a second goal and a vital point in the relegation battle as Mastrantonio’s floated free kick went through the mass of bodies and in off the post.

“It was a typical relegation battle type of game, said Mastrantonio. “I think in the first half they had the best of us but credit to girls they came out firing in the second half and we came with everything. I think a draw, if not a win was probably deserved – we showed a lot of heart and a lot of character.

“If you’re coming into the game from the bench you always want to try and make an impact on the game with it being such an important one, it doesn’t matter who gets the goals!

“Faye was brilliant when she came on and I hope I managed to make an impact on the game too. It was good to get a point.

“We went up their end in the first couple of minutes and almost scored, then they [Aston Villa] go on to get the momentum and get two goals. It was an amazing fightback in the second half but it’s definitely a work-on to try and get a good start to games, especially in the last two games of the season which are going to be crucial.

“We’ve been in some tough times this season and especially in the second half of the season we have shown what we can do. Anything is possible now and we just have to have the belief that we can go out there and get as many points as possible from the last two games.”
