Match Preview: Bristol City Women vs Aston Villa.

08 Jun 2026BCW Media Team

The fixture was postponed in October due to an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Villa squad and has been rescheduled for this evening, in what is a game full of importance for both sides.

A win for the Robins could move them off bottom spot and up to 10th, overtaking Villa and West Ham in the process.

Last time out:

City come into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw against a strong Reading side, with some Sophie Baggaley heroics earning her resilient side an important point on the road.

The visit to the Madejski Stadium was always going to be a tough fixture against mid-table Reading, and the Robins took the lead just before half-time when Emma Bissell finished off a swift counter-attacking move to net her first league goal and put City ahead.

Fara Williams pulled a goal back for the Royal’s after the break but her side couldn’t find another way past Baggaley between the sticks, with the ‘keeper making an outstanding 13 saves at the Madejski. City had some good chances late on through Harrison, Salmon and Wellings, however the points were shared.

Form:

Last five games: WLDWD

Strong performances in both the FA Continental Cup and the WSL mean that City head into the game against Villa in good form.

The draw against Reading means City have now drawn their last two league games, leaving themselves unbeaten in their past three matches in all competitions.

Last five games: WLDWD

The Claret and Blue’s 2-0 loss to table-toppers Manchester United at the weekend means Villa are winless in their last three matches in all competitions.

Gemma Davies’ side currently sit in 11th place in the WSL table – one point above City, once again proving the magnitude of the game for both sides.

Villa topped their Conti Cup group with a 100% record, scoring 10 and conceding just one in their three group games.

One to watch: Stine Larsen

A summer signing for the West-Midlands side, Larsen has impressed in the Barclays FAWSL despite only managing one goal so far this season.

The 24-year-old has made 48 appearances for Denmark and scored 14 goals on the international stage, with the forward being part of the Danish squad who finished runners-up in UEFA Women’s Euro’s 2017.

More of your traditional number nine, Larsen is a constant threat in the box and the City defenders will have to be on top of their game to keep her at bay.

Word from camp:

“We’ve now gone three games unbeaten in all competitions and that has given the girls some confidence going into an important game. It’s the second of a three-game week and we’re in a good place.

“I’ve been asked a lot about what the main focus has been with the group and its been to give them confidence. They’ve had such a tough start to the season and my job as a manager is to make sure they have clarity in terms of what they’re going after and to have the confidence to execute that.

“We’ve begun to get our rewards for having the confidence to go out there and execute what is required, but we can’t take our foot off the gas now."
