A win for the Robins this afternoon will take them above the Hammers and off the relegation place in what is City’s third game in seven days.

Last time out:

City fell to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa in their last game, a result which saw the Villain’s leap-frog Sunday’s opponents West Ham in the league table.

City created multiple chances in what was a strong first-half performance, however it was the visitors who went into the break with the lead when Ramona Petzelberger scored just before half-time.

Shania Hayles got Villa’s second after the break, but as City surged forward looking for a goal to get themselves back into the game, Hayles and Petzelbeger both found their seconds of the match to put their side 4-0 up.

City did find themselves unlucky on the attack at times, with Ebony Salmon and substitute Abi Harrison both looking dangerous whenever they went forward.

Last five games: LDWDL

City’s loss against Villa put an end to their three-game unbeaten streak in all competitions, however City will want to put that defeat behind them as they look to get back to winning ways against West Ham.

The squad has looked dangerous in the past few weeks, so manager Tanya Oxtoby will be hoping that her side can turn those performances into results against the Hammers.

West Ham United

Last five games: WWLWL

The Irons – much like City – have found their best results this season come in the FA Continental Cup, where they went unbeaten in the group stages – winning two and drawing one.

The East-London side are currently 11th in the WSL table, one spot above City with their only victory being a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City.

In their last league game, United were narrowly defeated by high-flying Chelsea 3-2.

Memory Lane:

  • April 28th, 2019
  • Bristol City Women 1-2 West Ham United
  • SGS Stoke Gifford Stadium

Due to the season’s premature ending last season, the fixture’s between the two sides were both unable to be played, meaning the last time these two sides met was all the way back in April, 2019, where a very late Jane Ross goal saw West Ham come from a goal behind to defeat City 2-1.

Heather Payne opened the scoring for City in the second half when she tapped home from close range following Abi Harrison’s cross into the box.

Leanne Kiernan equalised for the Irons after some nice footwork on the edge of the area before Jane Ross’ 90th-minute header secured all three points for her side in the last game of the 2018/19 season.

One to watch: Emily Van Egmond

The Australian joined the Hammers in the summer transfer window from Orlando Pride and is West Ham’s top scorer so far this season, notching four goals in 11 games in all competitions.

The midfielder has made 97 appearances for Australia as well as playing in three World Cup’s for her country, meaning she could potentially be in a midfield battle against City’s Aussies, Chloe Logarzo and Ella Mastrantonio.

Word from camp:

After the defeat to Villa, City midfielder Carla Humphrey stresses that there is no need to panic based on one result and that her and her side are looking forward to hopefully putting things right against West Ham.

“We’ve got Sunday to put it right. It’s a quick turnaround and we’ve got 24 more games this season so there are plenty more opportunities to pick up points.

“We need to focus on ourselves on Sunday and put in a good performance. We know what we can improve on from the Villa game, put that right on Sunday and the result should take care of itself. We’re looking forward to hopefully getting those three points and moving up on the board.”
