Palmer back with a point to prove.

The creative midfielder twice went close to getting on the scoresheet, while his trickery on the ball helped City keep possession in tight situations in his first start for the club since returning from loan at Swansea City.

Goals from Famara Diédhiou and a first for Academy graduate Zak Vyner ensured the Robins’ first win over Preston since 2011 and a first home victory over the Lilywhites 11 years to the day.

Palmer completed 70 minutes on his return to Ashton Gate – his first start for City in the league since November 2019 – and he spoke to Robins TV immediately after the final whistle.

He said: “It’s good to be back with the lads and the staff, I’m familiar with all of them so it’s good to be back and more importantly get the three points.

“It’s time to prove to everyone and myself that I’m good enough to be in the team. Unfortunately, a lot of the boys are injured but it gives me an opportunity to come and grab my place.

“The Gaffer (Dean Holden) called, asked if I was good to start and I said yes! It had been a difficult few week because of coronavirus but it’s good to get back.”

He added he was “buzzing” for Vyner to score his first goal for City to help the club continue their winning start to 2021. Now Palmer aims to help City continue their push in the second half of the campaign.

He continued: “With the squad we have, despite the injuries, there’s enough in the group to get us into the play-offs and the coaches and players know we have the capabilities to do it.”
