City return to Ashton Gate as they host Manchester United on Sunday, November 26th (12:30pm).
Lauren Smith will be looking for her players to build on the recent upturn in league form which has seen them pick up four points from the last three games in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
The latest of those points were gained in a 2-2 draw with Everton last Sunday, in which goals from Amy Rodgers and top scorer Amalie Thestrup saw the Robins come from behind twice to pick up a valuable point in Merseyside.
Smith’s side will be backed by a record crowd for the second time this season in BS3, exceeding the 12,008 that were in attendance against Arsenal in October.
OUR OPPONENTS: MANCHESTER UNITED
Founded: 2018
Stadium: Leigh Sports Village
Nickname: The Red Devils
Manager: Marc Skinner
Finish Last Season: 2nd
After years of unofficial women’s sides, Manchester United finally agreed to formally support and back the female team in 2001, before it was disbanded by a new ownership in 2005.
In 2018, it was announced that the club planned to reintroduce the women’s team, and they joined the newly-formed FA Women’s Championship ahead of the 2018/19 campaign. The Red Devils marked their first season back with a title triumph, seeing them promoted to the WSL at the first attempt.
In their maiden top flight season, United were awarded a fourth placed finish on a points-per-game basis after the season was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before they finished fourth again in their first full season the following year.
Marc Skinner was announced as manager in July 2021, and has taken the club to new heights since, missing out on the league title by only two points on the final day of last season, whilst also falling at the last hurdle in the FA Cup, beaten by Chelsea in the Final at Wembley.
Skinner’s side have made a steady but promising start to the season after a summer of transition in the transfer window, winning three, drawing three and losing just one of their opening seven league games, and he’ll be hoping his side has the quality and firepower to push them towards another title challenge this time around.
