City largely dominated proceedings at St Mary’s and had multiple chances to snatch victory within the 90 minutes, however Southampton managed to force the extra period.

Come extra-time, Saints were out of the blocks fastest as Ella Morris capitalised on the Robins’ slow start to convert at the far post on the 91st minute.

Jesse Woolley then had an opportunity to level the scoring from the spot with five minutes left to play, however the forward fired her penalty over the bar to let Saints off the hook.

Speaking on the FA Cup defeat, Smith said: “We’ve not been out performed, we've not been out played so frustration is definitely the feeling after that.

“We weren’t good enough in the final third really. We didn’t break past their backline and when we did weren’t clinical so that result hurts a bit when they have one shot - a moment in the game.

“They’ve done well to stay at 0-0 for that long. That has then gee’d them up, they’ve got going and caught us out.

“We know we can be better than that and have been better than that - that’s not enough right now and we need to change it.”
