Emily Syme joined the Robins Foundation Key Stage 1 and 2 Active Maths sessions at Evergreen Primary Academy this week as part of EFL Week of Action.
Syme got involved in the activities and games incorporating numeracy. These help enable students to engage with maths in a fun and accessible way and provide extra support for students outside of the classroom, who may be struggling with maths. This alternative form of learning helps inspire an interest in maths and improve students’ abilities.
Emily said:
“I’ve studied Maths at University, so am really interested in the education side of the Foundation’s work. It was great to help inspire kids to develop their maths skills in an engaging and active way.
“The kids all had a lot of energy and it was fun to help them practice their times tables all while keeping active and working together in teams!”
The groups each took part in activities focused on numbers and multiplication. They all received star points for their hard work and focus. The Robins Foundation have been running 4 Active Maths sessions each week for the last 2 years at Evergreen.
Senior Community Coach Ollie who leads on these Active Maths sessions said,
“Having Emily come down to a Maths session is so important for the kids to understand that you can be passionate about lots of different things. We use football and activity as tools to educate and inspire, so having a role model be interested and good at maths is amazing for the kids to see. Maths can be fun, interactive and cool!”
The Robins Foundation run a Premier League Primary Stars programme across 25 schools in Bristol. They provide PSHE workshops, PE support, lunchtime and after school clubs as well as English and Maths interventions. This programme uses the power of football to connect with young people, educate and inspire them. Students gain an increased understanding and confidence in these subjects and an increased enjoyment of sport and activity.
If your school may be interested in support from this programme, contact Primary Schools Manager Dan Hall at dan.hall@bcfc.co.uk.
