‘We had a point to prove’ - Morgan.

Morgan scored the game’s only goal in spectacular style to put the Robins in the driving seat on the South Coast, before the visitors were made to work for their victory as the Saints threw everything they had at Fran Bentley’s goal, but to no avail.

City's goalscorer was pleased to see a response from the group to restore their six-point lead at the top of the Barclays Championship table.

“I think after last week losing to London City we knew Southampton were going to be a good team so to come out and put things right was great for us.”

On her stunning strike, Morgan added: “I always look for a pass, which Jen (Foster) always gets on at me for! So when it fell to me I thought ‘let’s just hit it and see’ and it went in!

“I think everyone was taken by surprise, even myself so it was good to get on the scoresheet.”

The Welsh flyer reiterated that the squad must keep their foot on the gas with work rate and application a non-negotiable, especially at the business end of the season.

“Last week you could have questioned our attitude and work rate, which is not like us at all so we wanted to put that right this week. It showed with the effort from everyone on the pitch and we started really well - everyone is fighting for their shirts now and that’s the way it should be.

“Coming to the end of the season, that’s what it’s about - competing. And we can’t let it slip now, work rate is a given which was on show today.”
